Answer

Technology has significantly influenced the music business over time. Think about how modern digital software and streaming services evolved from the turntable and analog tape devices (Kramer, n.d). The music industry has been significantly affected at every level during the past few decades by the fast growth in digital Technology. The way individuals compose music has changed due to ever-changing Technology. Moving from using slow Sony stereo composers located in various studios to the ability to record music through smartphones, today, music production increased tremendously (Online. suu, 2021, February 2). Without securing or having a record deal, songwriters may record albums and make them available on digital delivery and streaming sites. In addition, music production application has provided many features in one application enabling producers to edit song and achieve high-quality sound and high-definition videos (Kramer, n.d). Through live-streamed performances, musicians may perform for viewers worldwide through the ever-growing use of social media, enabling the artist to reach a wide range of listeners.

The growth of Technology and its subsequent application to the music industry has helped improve music across the digital era and increased artist revenue through decreased production costs and awareness creation costs incurred by the artist. Due to broad market reach and reduced production, there has been a high rate of artist growth through the emergence of new artists and increased revenue in the music industry. This paper discusses how the development of Technology has led to an increased number of emerging artists, improved music quality, and accelerated the music industry economy.

Impact of Technology on Music Quality

The introduction of digital software is considered one of the most significant game-changers in the music business's production side. The software has altered the music sector by making it easier for producers to compose, record, and compose their tracks to a high standard (Reporter, 2022)). This software includes applications like ProTools and Logic, which provide a large selection of filters, tools, and connectors to enhance the audio quality of music. The VST innovation is one of the common technologies that significantly improved the music business. Digital audio workstations can incorporate software synthesizers and effects units thanks to Virtual Studio Technology (VST). To imitate professional recording equipment in software, it employs digital signaling techniques. During the blending and recording operations, this VST uses plugins that help combine and generate sounds. They have revolutionized the music industry, are quite advantageous, and helped elevate the music quality in the 21st century.

Consumers' access to higher-quality audio and lower production and distribution expenses were purported benefits of compact discs (Reporter, 2022). Early digital recording devices and software made recording more affordable and straightforward. The invention of this Technology helped improve the quality of the music and the entire music business. Multitrack production has been a crucial piece of music technology that enables producers to record and combine individual song segments. Since the composer does not have to record the song as complete, it dramatically reduces stress (Reporter, 2022). While introducing several elements to a single instrument, it also enables precise adjustments in selected song segments. Before the invention of these technologies, a piece of music had to contain all its components. All musicians, equipment, etc., must be in the same place for recording. However, with multitrack recording, many elements and portions of a song may be recorded individually and then merged to produce a whole entity.

Impact of Technology on Artists in the Music Industry

While it is undeniable that the digital music explosion harmed the significant players in the music industry, it also balanced the playing field for independent record companies and other smaller players (Online. suu, 2021, February 2). Musicians may record at a minimal cost thanks to improvements in home recording software. Additionally, artists and small labels may avoid more extensive, industry-controlled distribution networks thanks to digital media. Artists can interact with audiences directly thanks to the internet and video streaming platforms, eliminating the need for pricey PR efforts. In general, the music business has become more democratic due to the digital age, enhancing prospects for a wide range of artists and experts. Modern music is produced in large part thanks to cutting-edge musical Technology. Millions of sounds may be used in music creation thanks to software-based simulation technology and MIDI technology, which artists can program and control in complex ways. The innovation of composers or producers has offered much creative potential for the music industry to grow significantly.

Modern Technology has enabled musicians to grow and communicate with their fan communities through social media sites (Stone, 2020, October 6). Artists have used DSP (digital service providers) websites like Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, to further their careers. Musicians can still use chances previously exclusively available through record labels, thanks to social media. As a result, this has seen the emergence of newer artists in the music industry, which has led to exponential growth in the music industry (Reporter, 2022). The ability of artists to use social media to connect to a fan means they can share more life experiences with their fanbase. This norm was not possible before the technological revolution.

Previously, musicians had to send recorded demos to fans and do other tasks. For the period in the studio, they had to make a deal (Stone, 2020, October 6). Without live performances nearby, artists would have to take advantage of any opening. All these initiatives were made with the expectation that enough followers or an A&R professional from a firm would assist them in becoming more active in the business. The development of social media and the internet has fundamentally changed how bands get established. This study has discovered that social media levels the playing field and gives artists more power, even if many of the same strategies—such as performing live, recording, disseminating music, and attracting label attention.

To draw in more viewers and listeners, artists might produce material that is subsequently shared on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, or YouTube (MImusic, 2021). To express their style and persona, musicians might generate material using music, lyrics, videos, images, or skits. The most critical ways digital networks continue to be important sites in the entertainment industry is via the creation and distribution of content. Not only does the recorded material increase interest, but it also serves as the cornerstone for attracting and retaining devoted followers. It's critical to realize that each platform has various requirements for content. For instance, people frequently prefer lengthier videos on Facebook and YouTube while preferring shorter films on Instagram and Tiktok. It is dependent on the market as well as the platform. Social media involves understanding the kind of material users likes on each network.

Economic Impact of Technology on the Music Industry

Initially, digital Technology helped the music business expand. Napster then appeared. The internet developed to the point where people could exchange and download music. Dubbing cassettes and CD burning were no longer necessary for music piracy (Online. suu, 2021, February 2). Anyone can download practically any music they want through file-sharing websites for free. The music industry's revenue fell because of this. Following Napster, paid digital distribution services, most notably iTunes, changed the commercialization of downloads. More recently, music consumption has been transformed by streaming services like Spotify. However, even though these platforms now account for most of music business sales, revenues have yet to reach their pre-Napster levels.

The international music recording market is once again seeing expansion. After nearly 20 years of decreases brought on by piracy, recorded music income began to increase in 2015, as per the International Union of the Recording Industry (Online. suu, 2021, February 2). The worldwide industry's sales peaked in 2014 at $14 billion but increased to 20 billion dollars in 2019, bringing it back to levels seen in 2004 (). Recorded music's expansion has been fueled by the comfort and personalization of music streaming and the accessibility of smartphones and other smart devices. Global streaming income has increased at a 42% CAGR since 2015, according to the IFPI, compared to a 9% CAGR for the overall recording business. The IFPI figure illustrates how the industry's revenue mix has changed over time and how growth in streaming formats has much more than offset reductions in conventional and downloaded forms.

Drawbacks of Technology to the Music Industry

The LP recordings suffered a setback when the tape was found, and subsequently, CDs were developed to take the place of the tapes. After factoring in paid music copies from online retailers like iTunes, Nielsen SoundScan reports that audio music sales decreased by 18% between 2000 and 2006 due to the advent of Mp3 music (Mp3, 2022). The Mp3 format affects not just the media of music and how it is organized, released, and disseminated; by decreasing revenues, causing disputes between musicians and record labels, altering the industry's distribution model, and putting copyright concerns at risk, mp3 Technology has had a detrimental influence on the music business.

Conclusion

Technology advancement is considered one of the most outstanding inventions, impacting almost every aspect of life. Like other sectors, Technology has had a massive impact on music technology, accelerating its growth by a significant rate. The invention of new recording technologies, such as digital software, has enabled musicians to record high-quality music continuously. In addition, digital Technology has facilitated the growth in the number of musicians through the emergence of new musicians who have taken advantage of low-cost recording devices and marketing channels provided by gadgets such as personal computers and smartphones. The industry has seen revenue growth due to the artist's ability to take advantage of social media marketing and reach more followers across different parts of the world at an economical cost. However, technological advancement has led to decreased demand for music discs, which led to reduced sales due to the availability of digital downloadable music. With more technological inventions, the music industry is expected to grow even further in the coming years, with more artists expected to emerge.
