such as getting married, having a baby, or buying a house, but it can also be found in simple
things like a sunny day, a good cup of coffee, or spending time with loved ones. No matter what
happiness looks like to you, it is a valuable emotion worth pursuing. The pursuit of happiness is
a universal human goal, but what factors contribute to happiness is a matter of debate. This
research will explore what makes people happy and how happiness can be achieved.
Happiness is a complex emotion that is studied by psychologists and biologists alike. The
biology of happiness revolves around the chemical and physical changes that occur in the body
when a person experiences this emotion.
The first step in understanding the biology of happiness is to understand how the brain
processes emotions. The limbic system is responsible for processing emotions, and the amygdala
is specifically responsible for processing fear and other negative emotions. When the amygdala
is activated, it sends a signal to the hypothalamus, which then activates the sympathetic nervous
system. This system is responsible for the fight-or-flight response, and it causes the release of
stress hormones like cortisol (Steptoe, 2019).
Cortisol is a stress hormone that has several adverse effects on the body, including
increasing blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Chronic stress can lead to several health
problems, including heart disease, obesity, and depression. The good news is that the opposite is
true – when the body experiences happiness, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated.

This system has the opposite effect of the sympathetic nervous system and helps promote
relaxation and healing.
The biology of happiness also involves several different hormones, including dopamine
and serotonin. Dopamine is often referred to as the “feel-good” hormone and is involved in the
brain’s reward center. When we do something that makes us feel good, dopamine is released,
contributing to the feeling of happiness. Serotonin is another crucial hormone when it comes to
happiness. This hormone regulates mood, and low serotonin levels have been linked to
depression. When the body experiences happiness, serotonin levels increase, which helps to
improve mood and promote a sense of well-being.
The development of happiness is a process that begins with understanding what happiness
is and what factors contribute to it. Once you have a good understanding of happiness, you can
begin working on developing it in your own life. One of the first steps in developing happiness is
to identify your definition of it. What does happiness mean to you? What do you need in your
life to feel truly happy? Once you understand your own definition of happiness, you can begin
working on achieving it.
Many different factors can contribute to happiness. Some of these include having positive
relationships, a sense of accomplishment, feeling good about yourself, and having a positive
outlook on life (Veenhoven, 2018). You can work on developing these factors in your own life
by taking steps such as reaching out to others, setting goals and working towards them, and
practicing self-care.
Appraisal components of happiness can be divided into two main categories: internal and
external. Internal appraisal components involve people’s thoughts and feelings about their life
and happiness. This includes a person’s self-esteem, outlook on life, and ability to cope with

stress and adversity. External appraisal components involve a person’s perception of their
environment and the people around them (Schnebelen & Bruhn, 2018). This includes a person’s
social support network, housing and work situation, and overall living standard.
Both internal and external appraisal components are essential for happiness. People’s
thoughts and feelings about their life are crucial for their overall happiness, but so is their
perception of their environment and the people around them. A person with a positive outlook on
life and high self-esteem will be happier than someone who does not, but if their external
environment is not supportive of their happiness, it will be difficult for them to maintain it.
