Drunk Driving is Dangerous to Society
Drinking alcohol is a silent killer that no one can truly see, and it is one of the most
deadly substances on the planet. For as long as people can remember, alcohol has been a
significant issue in human culture. About three out of every ten Americans will be involved in an
alcohol-related car accident at some point in their life. The majority of injuries and fatalities
caused by drunk driving could have been avoided entirely. Concerned citizens must explore the
causes, consequences, and solutions to drunk driving to stop this national atrocity. Drunk driving
has been a problem in America since Henry Ford invented the assembly line. An issue in and of
itself, alcoholism can produce a wide variety of consequences when paired with driving. The
repercussions of this risky activity may include a first-time driving under the influence (DUI) or
license suspension, as well as a minor fender collision or, in the worst-case scenario, a fatal
accident. Therefore, driving while drunk is hazardous and criminal conduct that causes a real
problem in society as people get involved in accidents due to such cases.
In today's society, a phenomenon known as drunk driving affects everyone. It is
responsible for a large number of fatalities. In many nations, inebriated drivers flee the scene of
an automobile collision and refuse to accept responsibility for their actions or inactions.
According to recent research, drunk driving-related fatality and property damage cost the United
States $201.1 billion each year (Luckin, 2016). Loss of production, legal and judicial
expenditures, medical costs, insurance bills, traffic congestion, and property damage are all
examples of economic losses. Men are more often engaged in vehicle accidents involving
drinking than women (typically three times as often). According to the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration, accidents occur more often in rural locations with low population density,
and 70 percent of fatal crashes occur at night (Potter, 2016).

According to these findings, the vast majority of individuals feel that all drivers should be
sober while on the road at all times. Drunk driving is risky since it increases the likelihood of one
causing an accident. According to Braithwaite et al. (2018), if a society wants to maintain our
roads' safety, we should not allow anybody who is intoxicated to operate a motor vehicle (Potter,
2016). Others have said that when individuals are intoxicated, they become obstinate, and this
leaves them susceptible in a manner that makes them prone to causing accidents on the road.
They also informed me that no one can be cautious on the road when under the influence of
alcohol since they are not in the proper frame of mind.
Most people who agree that driving under the influence of alcohol should be prohibited
cite it as the cause of most accidents. Despite consuming alcoholic beverages, they should not be
allowed to drive even when they are in the company of someone who can guide them (Luckin,
2016). One group of people claim that they prefer to purchase alcohol to consume it later in their
own houses. Others have said that they leave their automobiles at home whenever they drink and
use public transportation to return to their apartments securely. The vast majority of DUI arrests
and alcohol-related collisions are conducted by repeat offenders, with drivers with suspended
licenses accounting for more than half of all arrests. Before they are arrested for driving under
the influence of alcohol, most people have driven at least 80 times (Luckin, 2016). Every day in
the United States, 300,000 people are killed or injured due to drunk driving.
In societies with high rates of alcoholism, it is typical for criminal activity to be
motivated by alcohol. According to Simpson (2017), it contributes to 40% of all violent crimes,
and 37% of convicts admit to drinking previous to their arrests. Drunk driving is classified as
Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), and Operating While
Intoxicated (OWI) in the criminal justice system. The severity of the penalties for each differs

from state to state. Because of easier availability to public transit, DUI rates in major cities (even
those with significant drinking cultures) may remain below the national average in the future.
According to Qu et al. (2015), New York City and Chicago have the lowest DUI rates in the
country, with rates that are 29% lower than the national average.
