Introduction

The worldwide spread of COVID-19 has led to acute shortage of medical masks and particulate matter filtering facepiece respirators, hence the recommendation for its usage to limited to only the healthcare settings. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) advocate that cloth masks availed in nonmedical environment to minimize the spread of COVID-19 (Chughtai, et al., 2020).  According to Howard et al (2020), nations across the globe have issued official guidelines that recommend proper methods of donning mask in public places to curtail the spread of COVID-19. Accordingly, nonmedical usage of face covers will most probably comprise of masks made of wide range of fibrous cloth materials that utilise a set of designs and construction techniques. Hence, this essay provides the use customized face mask that prevents contamination when inside the pocket or purse.

Historical context of cloth face mask

Cloth facial masks were earlier introduced in 1897 by surgeons to stop adulteration of the surgeon site, and thereafter in the beginning of 20th century to mitigate the spread of highly infectious diseases among the population particularly during the 1918-19 influenza global spread. During the period between 1920s and 30s the efficiency of cloth face masks in reducing surgical site infections and excluding bacteria, were demonstrated in observational and experimental studies. Nevertheless, facemask has been in usage in community and healthcare settings in less developed countries, especially in Asia (Eli, 2020). Muslims have been however wearing face mask, attracting abuses and attacks from Western Nations being accused of hiding their identity and covering their faces. In spite of that history shows that humans have been donning masks since time immemorial.
