Coping Skills
Perceptual Skills

Perceptual skills help individuals to develop a better perspective of a challenging
situation or problem. For example, once, I was at the park with my little sister, and she ran off
toward the playground. I could tell she was about to run into the street, so I used my perceptual
skills to judge the situation and ran after her to stop her.
Cognitive Change Skills

One example of a cognitive change skill is reframing. Reframing is a cognitive change
skill that involves looking at a situation from a different perspective. For example, suppose
someone is feeling anxious about an upcoming test. In that case, they might reframe the situation
by telling themselves that the test is an opportunity to show how much they have learned.

Support Networking Skills

Networking skills help in the process of connecting with other people to exchange
information and resources. My brother has always been independent and self-sufficient.
However, he realized he needed to lean on his friends and family for support when he went
through a difficult divorce. He was touched by how much they cared for him and wanted to help
me through that tough time. He learned that it is okay to ask for help and that he has a great
support system that he can rely on.

Stress Management And Wellness Skills

Stress management and wellness skills help individuals reduce tension by managing their
environment and themselves. When I found out that I was feeling stressed, taking a few deep
breaths and walking away from the situation for a few minutes helped me to feel better. I also
found it helpful to talk to someone about what is going on and get their perspective.

Problem-Solving Skills

Problem-solving skills allow individuals to identify and apply appropriate methods to
solve problems. When I was younger, I would get overwhelmed easily when faced with a
problem. I would shut down and not know how to proceed. However, now I have developed
better problem-solving skills, and I can take a step back, assess the situation, and devise a plan of
action.

Description and Expression of Feelings

The ability to perceive and express emotions is important for healthy psychological
functioning. When I am angry, I feel like I am about to explode. My heart races, and I get a tight
feeling in my chest. I could scream or hit something.
