Group Communication Seminar Reflection

The Group Communication Seminar has been an enlightening experience, providing deep
insights into this versatile world of nursing communication. Indeed, this class has provided a
molding outlook and approach with a wealth of multifaceted critical subjects toward nursing and
has fostered personal growth, educational enhancement, and professional development.
It has been quite a journey of self-discovery and improvement due to the course. Digging
deeper into subjects like mindfulness, empathy, and dynamics of group development has left me
with much more self-realization. Presence and full engagement are critical to the interactions,
and the power of active listening and showing empathy can make any connection meaningful
(Afriyie, 2020). Now that I understand the stages of group development and people's roles, I will
be more conscious of my interaction and contribution to the group's discussions and activities
from a more positive perspective. The talks on boundaries and biases, particularly concerning
microaggressions, have forced me to think about how I set my limits and the importance of
keeping healthy boundaries for my well-being, yet understanding where the other perspective
comes from.
This seminar has also enriched my nursing education theoretically and in practice in
matters to do with communication. It further helped me understand what psychological
motivations exist for group roles and dynamics, meaning understanding team functioning better
and having a clearer insight into the common challenges that must be worked out. The focus on
empathy, listening, and appropriate words has underscored communication's role in patient care
and how these skills directly affect patient outcomes and satisfaction. I could apply the
theoretical framework to practical cases through the examples and role-play I facilitated, which
enhanced my critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Topics on clinicians' emotions and the
resolution of conflict teach me how to be prepared when entering such complexities of the
healthcare environment, where emotions run high, and conflicts are always there. Handling such
a predicament gracefully and professionally is precious in my educational journey.
Professionally, the course has laid a strong foundation for my future in nursing.
Communication is central to forming an effective healthcare team and building a conducive
organizational culture (Ghazawy et al., 2021). I have learned here that through practice in the
natural healthcare setting, clear and compassionate communication is of the essence in sharing
with patients among themselves and even with other professionals working in or concerned with
the healthcare setting. It handles the part on coping with challenging encounters, dealing with
disgust, somatic complaints, and substance abuse, which has prepared me for what seems to be
an arduous journey in the life of a nurse. In addition, the emphasis on cultivating mindfulness
and ongoing personal and professional development has nurtured in me the attitude of lifelong
learning, which is highly called for by any change process in health care.
In essence, the course of Group Communication Seminar I has been instrumental in
transforming me into a better nursing student and, ultimately, a future healthcare professional. It
honed my communication skills, making me an empathetic listener and able to function in a
group. Those skills are essential to the role of a nurse and are important in personal development,
even to the point of professional excellence. This course has laid an underpinning in my
educational journey, and the lessons will surely keep guiding me for years in my approach to
nursing and healthcare communication.
