Practical Assessment
My experience in this psychotherapy counseling class has allowed me to study and
know that critical thinking has a methodology. I did not anticipate that this program would
shift how I interact with others daily, both in my personal and professional lives. Since I was
a child, I have always been a psychotherapy counselor. As a result, I can confidently say that
my civilian employment will benefit significantly from my newfound knowledge, as well as
my ability to interact with others (Joyce & Sills, 2018 P.56). I have learned various
approaches and techniques for counseling, and to the best of my knowledge, I believe
cognitive behavioral therapy suits me better. As a cognitive counselor, I will challenge my
clients' poor thinking habits for them to be able to generate solutions that are accurate
representations of the challenges they are now experiencing.
My first strength is exhibited in establishing a non-judgmental and welcoming
atmosphere for the patient. Resources and guidance given to the patient to assist her in
overcoming obstacles in her life were an area of strength in terms of my evaluation
techniques, teaching strategy, and counseling material (Corsini & Wedding, 2014 P.21). One
area where I can improve is introducing the premise and laying out the objectives. Although
the session went well, I neglected to explain to the patient what we would discuss in the
session. The other area of improvement will be decreasing the amount of time I spent staring
at the computer screen and my body movements.
Taking the psychotherapy counseling course and utilizing the concepts and principles
I have learned over the last four to five weeks has given me a fantastic personal and
professional opportunity. Because of this, I can examine the issue from an objective
standpoint instead of reacting from an emotional one when faced with an opposing viewpoint.
